“Watch your step.”
Client: Scania
Agency: Alten
Role: Industrial Designer Engineer
Task: Crew Cab - Product Owner
Year: 2014-2016
Placed at the Special Vehicles department (RTLZ) at Scania as a consultant from Alten, a leading engineering and technology consultant firm, the main goal was to update the retractable boarding step for the New Crew Cab generation.
The work involved re-thinking and updating the boarding step, consisting of brackets, plastic cover, lamps and mechanics. A lot of work and consideration went into making the brackets being able to fit with the different configurations of the truck as well as making the plastic cover being able to work with the rest of the design. Scania has a very modular approach and the costumer is given a broad choice of configurations. Example, different size on the fuel tanks behind the boarding step depending on costumer needs.
The tasks where mainly completed in the 3D software CATIA, modelling sheet metal and vacuum formed plastic as well as fitting tubes within the design. To make this work, input from other departments such as ergonomics and manufacturing where crucial for the success of the product and meetings where held weekly to stay on track.
In the end several 3D printed models, water-cut boarding steps and vacuum formed plastic models where being presented and evaluated buy multidisciplinary teams, to be able to continue to a manufacturing stage.
