Even a good book needs time to rest, the reader has to be given time for it’s message, to understand and digest it. “Lighthouse” a lamp primarily and a bookrest secondarily, was created on this simple principle. During the creative process some keywords came up more frequently then others; simple, functioning, smart, enduring, and naked. In other words the product shall be able to communicate a classic Swedish design with a twist.
The lamp is constructed out of three pieces. The base is made out of Swedish elm and it has a natural graining that stands out and gives the product a closeness to nature. It was also chosen for its high density that gives the lamp a sturdy base. Inside the base a rectangle out of acrylic plastic is placed. It functions as a lampshade and can be used to control the light depending how you place it in the base. This works because of the different acrylic plastic on the different sides (smoky dark grey and clear).
A LED-lamp was chosen because of its low operating temperature that prevents the lampshade from overheating. It sits in a handcrafted lamp-holder of solid aluminium that is screwed in to the lampshade. Between the lampshade and lamp-holder is a thin layer of teflon-padding to add friction and protect from wear and tear.
To top it off, the cord is not hidden, instead it’s part of the lamps overall design. It was carefully chosen from Frinab AB, a Swedish cable company and its NUD collection to match the rest of the lamp.
