“How to focus on the driver, without losing ‘Driver Focus’.”

Client: Scania

Role: Master Thesis at LTH - The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, individual assignment

Task: Evaluate Scania’s Driver Focus

Year: 2011

How do you translate and implement the term “Driver Focus” in a truck cab? That was the main question that needed to be answered in this master thesis work carried out at Scania, a Swedish vehicle manufacturer known for its premium long haulage trucks.. Under the supervision of Kristofer Hansén, head of styling, the work consisted of developing a “Driver Focus” concept and implementing it on the Scania interior.

As a pre-study a thorough search of today’s technology- and vehicle market, ranging from such diversities as musical equipment to the interior of ploughing trucks began. Trying to find up to date and unique technical solutions that could evolve “Driver Focus”. A user survey was also carried out at the Scania Transport Laboratory successfully reaching a broad group of drivers and to complete the pre-study it was decided to focus on the armrest and implement “Driver Focus” as best as possible under its restrictions.

Concept generation started including brainstorming sessions with a wide representation of Scania employees to get a varied range of ideas. Leading to concept sorting and functional analysis ending in applying final specifications. Evaluation of the concept’s followed deciding to work with three different concepts instead of one and deciding on their final characteristics.

The project ended with a presentation for Scania for which full-scale 3D-models and renderings focusing ultimately to enhance “Driver Focus” where shown, along with a banner describing the project.
